Sukkot

During Sukkot Holiday the book of Ecclesiastes קהלת is read in the synagogue. The author and “star” of this book, King Solomon, brilliantly composed it and went into detail saying no matter how rich and famous you are and no matter how much you own, you will never reach true happiness. The following song (lyrics below) conveys this message and others as well. What other messages can you find in the song? Are they, in any way,  connected to your delegation?

Back to Basics

All is vanity
And a chasing after the wind
Said the king
The rise and the fall
The great and the small
Said the king who'd seen it all
Said the king who'd seen it all

The sun rises
The sun goes down
The wind blows south
And it turns around
All the rivers run unto the sea
The sea isn't full
And nothing is new under the sun
If you see something new
You know it's been done
So go and have fun and enjoy being young

Chrous
That which is crooked cannot be made straight
And too much wisdom can get your real mad
And knowing too much can get you real sad
But laughter is foolish and joy: what does it get?
I tried to be happy by drinking some wine
I built myself houses and gardens of all shapes and all kinds
I gathered silver and the treasures of kings
I got myself singers and big bands and blings
So I was greater than anyone before
Whatever I desired, I got it and more

Chorus

There's reason and time for everything under the sky
A time to be born and a time to die
A time to break and a time to make
A time to love and a time to hate
Sometimes sorrow is greater than laughter
And sometimes sadness can get your heart higher
Sometimes the hardcore yelling of the wise
Is better than the pop song of fools and the sweetness of lies
And yesterday's heartaches can be tomorrow's good old times
Now don't be overly righteous nor overly wise
I've seen the just men suffer and the evil men thrive
When the wise don't get the fortune and the skilled don't get the fame
And no one knows who's winning or losing this game

  1. This song presents that no matter how rich and famous you are , your will never reach true happiness ,and I think that its true, because even when you don't own a lot and you have nothing, you can still be happy .
I can find from this song that only god will lead you there.

  2. The other message that I get is that no matter how rich you are, how much you own or how much you're smart and full of knowledge you can still be sadder than less succefull person. The secret is not to have it all, the secret is to be happy with what you have. You need to mind your own business, take your time and do something useful with it and in this way you'll be the most satisfied. It connects with our delegation cause we need to look at our experience here and to appreciate every single moment of it. Instead of looking on all the things they have and we don't, we should look on all the things that we have and they not, enjoy them and appreciate them. That is the truly way to be happy.

  4. the song of king solomon has a main message for the rich and famous that says they are not necessarily happy with all of their "bling bling".
the song also contains illusions and opposites.
the illusions in the song are:"chasing after the wind"- you think you chase after something when its nothing - the king think he pursue happiess by getting everything he wanted-building houses and gardens from all sapes and kinds, getting silver and gold, even drinking some wine (all the illusions people think brings happines), when in real life these things didnt bring any joy to the king.
the opposites in the song are:the sun rises and goes down, to be born and die, to love and hate...
in the song it says that there is nothing new under the sun, therefore- there is for everything a time- everything is known- to the man to born and to die, that you have time to love and hate,...
i think the opposites in the songs are connected to our delegation.
even from the smallest differences: most of the houses in la are bigger than in tl, the americans put more effort into school work.
to the bigger:the routine of life- american are more calculated with time when the israelies livs in a more free, spontaneous
    world.

  5. I think that what the song is talking about is that not everything that glitters is gold - Sometimes material things are not the ones that can make you happy, and what looks very fancy and glamorous is not always better than the small, simple things.
I think that the song connects to our delegation because we go to many places, see many things and stay with families we are not used to, and we need to learn how to make the best out of it, laugh, create good memories and appreciate every moment, and not to try and focus on the material and negative things - The attitude you have towards something determines how well your experience will be.

  6. The song is trying to teach us what appricetion is. He doesn't only present differences between LA AND TA but also differences between American and Israelis. The song shows that it doesn't matter how much you have or posess if you don't know to appricte it, and always remember that there are people outside in the vast world who don't have you will be sad and disappointed. And therefore I believe that this program makes us know how to appricte what we have compared to others.

  7. The messages that I can Find in the song are that possession doesn't bring happiness, that one needs to go with life and enjoy the moment, that there is always bad and always good, and that trying to figure out life and understand happiness doesn't take you anywhere.
these messages may be connected to the delegation because we see here a different life style and the song tells us all these ways to be happy, to enjoy life, are not the point or the main thing. the point is not the way you do it but the result.

  8. the song is saying that no matter how much money, and things in the world we still can not buy happiness with money. you can be happy only if you decide it, only you choose how t look at things in the world. i think that the message that you can understand by the song that connected to the delegation is that here we can see how much things we have in Israel, by that we are not close to them right now and we can more appreciated that things that we have back home.

  9. The other message that i found in the song is that no matter how rich you are everyone has his ups and downs one day you are rich and the other poor and because of that you need to be happy with what you have ,live the moment ,not judge and that no matter what the only thing that you can't get with money is the friendships you make and the love you give and get because that is the only thing that eventually remains and matters during your life
and thats how it connects to the delegation, the friends we make will be our friends for life and thats worth more than money
